The Reasons People Go to Rehab

How do you know if you or someone you love needs rehab? There are many signs of addiction to look out for, but sometimes even the most well-meaning loved ones don’t see them. Here’s what to keep an eye out for when it comes to deciding whether your loved one needs rehab—and how you can help them get there, if they do.

1) Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a chronic disease that causes physical and psychological dependence on alcohol. If you drink large amounts of alcohol over long periods of time, your body adapts to it, so you need more alcohol to feel its effects. Eventually, your body begins craving alcohol. Many people who drink too much begin feeling they need it just to get through their days—and often times their nights as well. The best way for an alcoholic or problem drinker to break free from these damaging cravings is through treatment at a rehab facility.

2) Drug Addiction

Some people go to drug rehab in New Jersey because they are addicted to drugs, while others go because of another form of substance abuse (like alcohol). Still, other people go because they suffer from co-occurring disorders (e.g., an addiction and depression). Whatever your reason for seeking treatment, help is available—but it might not be easy. You should know that you’re not alone in your struggle; 1 in 10 adults has a substance use disorder. If you want help, get it.

3) Sexual Addiction

Sexual addiction is typically defined as an obsession with sexual thoughts, feelings or behaviors which interferes with daily life. If you think you might be suffering from sexual addiction, get professional help right away. While there is currently no formal definition of sex addiction in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V), it’s generally considered an unhealthy relationship with one’s sexuality that can lead to distress or impairment in various areas of life.

4) Dependence on Gaming

Gaming disorder is a proposed diagnosis in DSM-5, but we’re not sure how many people actually suffer from it. At its core, gaming disorder refers to an impaired control over gaming behavior; as such, we recommend that those who recognize that they might be struggling with addiction seek support and help through professional treatment and counseling services.

5) Other Things Addicted To

If you’re struggling with addiction, there are many types of support available. Recovering addicts will tell you that programs like Alcoholics Anonymous have been tremendously helpful—but only if you are truly ready for change. Also, attending meetings can help keep your friends and family informed about what they can do to support you. Additional options include outpatient drug-treatment programs, rehabilitation facilities, 12-step meetings and therapy sessions. Many people turn to alternative therapies like yoga or acupuncture in order to manage their symptoms; check out our post on how acupuncture works. All options are designed with one goal in mind: your sobriety.
