For many, sexually transmitted diseases are something that you don’t talk about and if you get one, you are probably a very bad person. In reality, however, having a sexually transmitted disease doesn’t mean that you are a bad person and it IS something that you should talk about, with an STD Clinic London. STD’s aren’t as uncommon as many people think either, in fact, they are very common. Medical experts say that, as a result of increased STD testing London, we are seeing more cases of sexually transmitted diseases including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and syphilis. That means that there are many people living with STD’s on a daily basis when a simple test can get them the help they need.

There are many common myths and misconceptions that people have about STD’s and we are going to take a look at some of them to set the record straight:

10 Myths About STDs That You Should Stop Believing

You Would Know If You Or Someone Else Had An STD- this isn’t necessarily true. Many STD’s show very few visible symptoms, while others, such as chlamydia, can be transmitted even if you don’t have any symptoms.

You Can’t Get STD’s From Oral Sex- you are still at risk for infections such as gonorrhoea, chlamydia, syphilis, herpes, Hepatitis B, and HPV with oral sex. You can minimise your risk of infection by using condoms and dental dams.

All Forms Of Birth Control Prevent STD Transmission- this is not true at all. In fact, only condoms can protect you from contracting an STD.

Condoms Are 100% Effective In Preventing STD Transmission- while condoms are the only form of birth control that can protect you from STD’s, they are 100% effective. Skin to skin contact can still put you at risk of genital warts, herpes, and HPV.

You Can Still Spread The Disease On Antibiotics- if you are being treated for an STD and you are taking your antibiotics, you won’t spread the sexually transmitted disease that you are being treated for.

Once You’ve Been Treated, You’re Immune To The Disease- even if you have had a certain STD and have been treated for it, you are not immune to it and you can get the infection again.

You Can Catch STD’s From A Toilet- it is extremely unlikely that you will catch an STD from a toilet seat or other surface as these types of viruses and bacteria cannot live outside the human body.

Having Sex In Hot Tub Minimises Your STD Risk- it is rumoured that chlorine can kill just about any type of bacteria. This isn’t true and sex in a hot tub or pool will not minimise your STD risk. It could, however, put you at risk for other vaginal infections.

You Don’t Need To Worry About STDs If You’re In A Relationship- whether you are in a relationship or not, you still need to consider your partner’s previous sexual history.

You Can Die From An STD- in the past, this was true and many people did die from sexually transmitted diseases including gonorrhoea and chlamydia. Today, however, it is very unlikely that you will die as modern medicine is available to relieve the symptoms of STD’s and keep you healthy.
